Austin residents helped redraw the city council district boundaries.

Background

Austin has a process for residents to redraw the boundaries of the council districts every ten years. The boundaries of the council districts greatly impact Austin’s government and will shape how residents are represented for the next decade.

Public involvement

The 14 member Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (ICRC) redrew the 10 City Council Districts based on 2020 Census data and three rounds of public input. First, twelve public forums were held in the ten City Council Districts to gather the first round of public input from July - August 2021. Second, five forums were held in the four Travis County Precincts from September - October 2021 to gather a second round of public input. Finally, citizens had three more opportunities to view and provide input on the final draft of the map before the ICRC voted to certify the map in October.

The Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission convenes once a decade to perform one of the most essential tasks in city government.

The cynical view of city politics is that it’s all about money and powerful interests.

Yet those forces aren’t readily apparent in the ongoing work of the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (ICRC), a group of 14 unpaid Austinites who were selected partially at random from a large pool of vetted applicants.

Nov. 1 is the deadline for Austin's ICRC to adopt new City Council district map

The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to release the 2020 census data needed to redraw federal, state, and local electoral districts this Thursday, Aug. 12, four days ahead of schedule – but months later than in past redistricting years, following setbacks incurred because of the COVID-19 crisis and meddling by the prior president and his appointees. So time is tight for those who need to redraw maps in time for 2022 elections.
