This project has concluded. Thank you.

Thank you for participating in Austin Energy’s recent public input process. The Electric Vehicle Ready and Electric Ready workshop recordings and survey results are now available.

As City of Austin staff considered adopting the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code, they determined that more time was needed to gather public input before adding local amendments addressing Electric Ready and EV Ready. The City committed to a more robust community discussion about potential ways to address these topics. A series of stakeholder engagement workshops and a survey were conducted in response to that commitment. Hosted on this page are the full survey results, links to each of the workshops, and a summary document of the public engagement process.

Community Survey - Completed

Austin Energy conducted an outreach survey to gather community feedback and perspectives on potential future programs, incentives, and policies which support Electric Vehicle (EV) Readiness and Electric Readiness in the City of Austin. This feedback will help provide potential future policy and program direction for each. This survey is single-family centric but will also be used to inform commercial applications.

  • EV Ready - the design and construction of a parking space with the necessary infrastructure, including conduit, wiring and any special circuitry needed to easily receive the installation of a Level 2 charger
  • Electric Ready - the design and construction of residential or commercial buildings with the necessary infrastructure, including conduit, wiring and any special circuitry needed to easily receive the installation of all electric or dual fuel electric appliances (e.g., hot water heaters, stoves, HVAC)

Full survey results are available HERE

Community Meetings - Completed

  • Engagement Planning - March 10, 12:00PM - 1:00PM (video not available)

  • EV Ready Workshop - March 29, 1:00PM - 2:30PM (video below)

  • Electric Ready Workshop - April 6, 1:00PM - 4:00PM (video below)

  • Electric Ready and EV Ready Community Discussion - May 19, 2:00PM - 3:00PM (video below)

Background

In 2021, the International Code Council (ICC) released new versions of the building codes, including the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). ICC discussed including Electric Ready and EV Ready provisions in the new version of the code but subsequently dropped them during an appeals process. As City of Austin staff considered adopting the IECC locally, they decided it was not the appropriate time to add local amendments addressing Electric Ready and EV Ready. Instead, the City committed to a more robust community discussion about potential ways to address these topics. This survey and previous workshops are the follow through to that commitment.
