Curbside recycling, composting, and bi-annual large brush and bulk collections are bundled and paid for from the base-fee on your utility bill.

Coated cardboard can be tricky because often it is actually coated in a plastic layer, not a natural wax. When it comes to these kinds of products, err on the side of caution. If you are able, ask the vendor or check with the manufacturer. If they can’t give you a clear answer, keep it out of the compost.

A good rule of thumb is that if a paper or cardboard item is heavily glossed and/or inked, and it is not BPI or ASTM certified compostable, it belongs in the trash cart. Examples of other coated products that would not be accepted in the compost: milk cartons, standard soda cups, and coffee cups.

Yes. We ask that you fill your green cart first, but we will also empty containers no larger than 34-gallons or heavier than 50 pounds.

In response to the increasing concerns of COVID-19, and for the safety of our staff and residents, we are not providing kitchen collectors at this time. To find out about future opportunities to pick up a kitchen compost collector, please sign up for our monthly newsletter or follow us on Facebook

If you are looking for ideas in the meantime, a coffee can, food storage container or any other reusable container make a great kitchen compost collector.

When buying bags, remember that not all compostable bags are equal. In Austin, we can only process bags that are BPI certified. If you don't see the certification, skip the bag and put compostable materials straight into the cart.

If you are unable to fit all of your yard trimmings in your cart, bag extra yard trimmings in lawn-and-leaf paper bags and place at the curb next to your cart.

    Check the Curbside
Composting guide to see what else is accepted in your green composting cart.

Bundle and place small branches and tree limbs (no longer than five feet, and no wider than three inches in diameter) at the curb.

Check the Curbside Composting guide to see what else is accepted in your green composting cart.

Whether you use a bag, or choose to skip the bag and put compostable materials straight into the cart is up to you. Many online and brick-and-mortar retailers sell compostable bags. When buying bags, remember that not all compostable bags are equal. In Austin, we can only process bags that are BPI or ASTM certified.

We ask our customers to give curbside composting a try for a few weeks before making the decision to opt out of the service to keep valuable compostable material out of the landfill.

If you do not wish to use your green cart, you can call Austin Energy at 512-494-9400, and ARR will arrange for the cart to be picked up.

Curbside recycling, composting, and bi-annual large brush and bulk collections are bundled and paid for from the base-fee on your utility bill. Customers who return their green cart will still be charged for the service whether they choose to participate or not.
